This trail highlights the attractive diversity of Box-Ironbark forest, featuring Stringybark, Box and Ironbark species as well as an impressive stand of White Box, distinctive grass-trees and gorgeous spring wildflowers. It also passes mullock heaps and an open-cut mine, reminders of the impact of gold-mining on the natural landscape. The forest here is home to wallabies, kangaroos, possums and gliders, as well as many native birds such as parrots, cockatoos, owls and honeyeaters, including the rare Regent Honeyeater (let the ranger know if you see one!).
If you’re pressed for time you can still 'Take-A-Walk', from the VicRoads wayside stop on the southbound Hume Freeway north of Chiltern. This easy 1 kilometre track is a great introduction to the Ironbark forest and mining heritage of the Chiltern area. Information boards along the way describe the main features of the forest, including mining relics, major vegetation communities and the birds and animals found here.
Please stay on the tracks as there are many old mine shafts in the area.
