Catch and Size Limits

You will need a Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence. Catch and size limits apply to many fish species. Details of these regulations are provided in the Victorian Recreational Fishing Guide (VRFG) available free from most bait and tackle stores, from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) website www.dpi.vic.gov.au/fishing or by ringing 136 186. The VRFG also details other regulations including:
• restricted areas or closed waters
• protected species
• equipment restrictions
• closed seasons for trout, Murray cod and other species

Handling and Releasing Fish

Excessive handling can damage a fish's body and slimy protective coating. If a fish is to be released, the hooks should be removed, if possible, while the fish remains in the water. If the fish must be handled out of water, reduce damage to the fish by using a net without knotted mesh, keeping your hands wet while handling the fish and wetting any surface on which you place the fish.

Other than declared noxious species you are obliged to return immediately to the water any fish that you do not intend to keep. Unwanted fish must be returned with the least possible injury or damage. Removal of the hook from fish that are to be returned to the water is a matter of judgement in relation to the potential damage that may be caused to the fish.

If the fish is hooked in the jaw or mouth, remove the hook as cleanly as possible using a hook remover or needle nose pliers. If the fish is hooked deeper in the mouth or in the stomach through having swallowed the bait, do not try to pull or twist the hook out. Cut the fishing line as close as possible to the hook and release the fish. The hook should dissolve in time.

If you catch a tagged fish record the date, length and location. Keep the tag, some scales and the fish or frame frozen and contact DPI on 1800 652 598 or VICTAG on 1800 677 620.   

Marine National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries

Legislation was passed in the Victorian Parliament in June 2002 to create 13 Marine National Parks and 11 Marine Sanctuaries. Commercial and recreational fishing are prohibited in these areas.
